The Journey

Being a compendium of thoughts as we drive and drive and....

Biloxi blues

The day started badly – very foggy and windy. We waited a while, but it didn’t get better, so we put off kayaking for the day and headed off for some breakfast. The first place was out of food, the second was small and had a long line, the third turned out to be on the Air Force base (controlled entrance), and the forth was a donut place with the most unappetizing options. By then it was time for brunch, so we headed back to the hotel for coffee and the lunch that we never ate yesterday.

It got better after that. The Ohr-O’Keefe Museum featured the works of George E. Ohr, the self-proclaimed “Mad Potter of Biloxi”. His work was just a bit ahead of its time. Pottery as art, not craft, with some strange shapes and designs. There were also some other reasonable exhibits in the Frank Gehry designed set of buildings. [Notice his original sketch design in the photo.]

Then on to The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum, which was just what its name suggests. It included the revolutionary (for its time) machine that automatically shelled and deveined shrimp, as well as some wonderful old wooden boats, and exhibits about boat building, hurricanes, the seafood industry, etc.

Dinner at a touristy, but tasty, seafood joint.
